Imagine you’re lost in the woods, tripping on acid, disoriented, with loud rock but pleasing rock music echoing through the night air. That might be the best way to describe Animals, one of the most unique cinematic experiences you’re likely to encounter this or any other year. It’s a film that defies cinematic conventions and weaves a whimsical tale of angst, sexual awakening and the power of the mind. Our protagonist is Pol (Oriol Pla), a quiet and brooding teenager, whose best friend in the world is a walking, talking stuffed teddy bear named Deerhoof who also happens to sound like HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Pol’s world is turned upside down with the arrival of a sexy new transfer student (Augustus Prew) that also coincides with the disappearance of a local girl and the burgeoning feelings he might have for Laia (Roser Tapias). As Pol gets more and more fascinated with the dark and mysterious stranger, the other relationships in his life are put to the ultimate test, culminating in an ending that is both wildly eccentric and eerily heartbreaking. Featuring acclaimed British actor Martin Freeman (The Hobbit trilogy) and Javier Beltran (Little Ashes) and featuring cinematography from the great Eduard Grau (A Single Man, Buried). This film recently made its North American premiere at Outfest and is a co-presentation between Birmingham Shout and Sidewalk. Why? Because we both thought it was awesome.
Screens with “Angel Dust” (Dir: Nathan Adloff, 2013, World Premiere, USA, 10 min.)
As Paul begins to lose grasp on his life, he discovers a new meaning for substance abuse. Starring Danny Rhodes from last year’s world premiere, Cock N Bull.
