I always sort of perceived the 70s in the united states as a whole decade of drinking to forget about what was actually lost during the 60s. Which is largely what Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas is all about. By the time I was growing up there really wasn't much left in the way of spectacular, grand dreams about the world. "Tried it. Didn't work." By the time the 80s rolled around it went straight to just cynically profiting from the children of the lost revolution.
